Notes No signs on site except for the map and history at the base of the mountain. It is fairly difficult to find the trails around the top that lead to the other 2 ridges. I could only find two and had to skip the other 2. Even though it was still mid April there was a lot of undergrowth making it more difficult. I would recommend going in the winter. This could easily be done as a set with Hachioji Castle and/or Odano Castle. I visited Odano Castle followed by Jofukuji Caste and would have stopped by Hachioji Castle if I didn't have to be back in downtown Tokyo early.
History The history of this castle is very unclear. It is attributed to the Oishi clan because several nearby temples are also attributed to them, but the time period is unknown. The Oishi were vassals of the Kanto governor, the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan. When Hojo Ujiteru was adopted by Oishi Sadashige, it is thought that the first castle he moved into was Jofukuji Castle. Jofukuji Castle is located just north of Hachioji Castle and may have been used as a satellite fortification after Ujiteru moved into Hachioji Castle. The castle was left untouched since Oishi's times making it a valuable example of a mountaintop castle from the Sengoku Period.
