Notes When you see the signs at the trail head there are actually two trails from here. One stays on this side of the stream going up to a small shrine, the other crosses the stream. You can also easily visit nearby Hinohara Castle which is on the same bus route in one day.
History Legend says that the castle was built by the Komiya clan, a member of local feudal group called the Bushu Minami Ikki. When Hojo Ujiteru succeeded to the head of the Oishi clan, Oishi Sadahisa retired to Tokura Castle. As hostilities between the Hojo and Takeda escalated, Tokura Castle became an important point in the relay of information to nearby Hinohara Castle which guarded an important passage to the Kai Region. It is said you can see Hinohara Castle from the Demaru of Tokura Castle, but it is too wooded today to see for yourself. Tokura Castle was abandoned in 1590 with the downfall of the Hojo.
