History

Yashiro-yashiki, also called Yashiro-yakata, was constructed - it is thought - sometime after Yashiro Morikuni defected to Takeda Shingen. It was inhabited by Yashiro Katsunaga from the late Sengoku period (around 1598). The ramparts were up to 100m long on each side. The Yashiro Clan were originally from Shinano where they served as vassals of the Murakami Clan, but, following the death of Yashiro Masakuni, they betrayed the Murakami to side with Takeda Shingen in 1553. After the fall of the Takeda Clan the Yashiro Clan followed the Tokugawa Clan. Yashiro Katsunaga was a vassal of the Tokugawa in the Edo period worth 6,773 koku.

Visit Notes

There is a long (50m), tall (3m) segment of dorui (earthen ramparts) still to see of the Yashiro-yashiki today. This was the northwestern embankment. The dorui can be seen from the road but site’s the interior is private property. The lord’s cenotaph is also found in a nearby field but I only saw it from a distance as I was scarce on time.
