KoyamuraYashiki (6).JPG

History

Koyamura-yashiki is a site mentioned in the Shinputōki (1724) as the manor hall of Teźuka Mitsumori, a vassal of Kiso Yoshinaka in the 12th century. However, Edo period scholarship in this case may not be up to snuff, as modern scholars believe the Teźuka were based in an area of that name in modern Ueda Municipality, whay over the mountains (also, in the 1720s the Shiojiri-jin'ya was established very nearby; coincidence or propaganda effort?). Instead, some suggest that the manor was constructed by the Kanasashi clan of Shimo-Suwa, accessed via a short mountain pass. There are other castle and residence sites nearby, and Koyamura-yashiki is thought to predate these.

Visit Notes

I visited the site of Koyamura-yashiki, a minor local site, as part of a castle walk. I began my castle walk for the day at Shiojiri Station. Once one passes over a bridge of the River Ta, the town of Shiojiri suddenly shifts to a more rural setting. No ruins remain of this fortified residence built on the terrace of the Ta River.
