History
Before Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Jurakudai, he built a smaller base here in 1584. The site has since been called Myōkenji Castle because Myōken Temple was relocated to make way for it, although at the time it was called 二条第 (Nijōdai / Nijōtei), after the name of the city block it was on, similar to Nijō Castle which is adjacent (there is also Nijō-jin'ya). In fact Oda Nobunaga also had a palatial compound in the area called the Nijōgoshinsho, which was located next to Myōkenji, in turn located just a couple of blocks from Honnōji. Myōkenjijō, a fortified compound surrounded by a moat, was used as a place to stay and co-ordinate by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and, after the completion of Jurakudai, it became the residence of Maeda Gen'i. A fortified residence was not an unusual site in the capital at that time; at one point it must've seemed like the whole city was made up of small castles. Missionary Alessandro Valignano stayed at Myōkenji around 1590.
Visit Notes
Nothing remains, and there is only a sign marker, but the site is interesting in tracing the history of the Toyotomi Era in Kyoto.
