History

Kuroda Yoshitaka was stationed here by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587. After the Battle of Sekigahara he was rewarded with greater lands in Fukuoka and replaced by Hosokawa Tadaoki. Hosokawa finished the construction of this castle and also built Kokura Castle. When Hosokawa Tadaoki moved to Kokura Castle he placed his son Tadatoshi in Nakatsu Castle. Following the Hosokawa, the Ogasawara Clan took over the castle and ruled until they were replaced by Okudaira Masashige in 1717. The Okudaira ruled until the Meiji Restoration.

I visited this castle in August, and it's one of my favourites, despite the concrete. The setting on the river and sea is impressive and beautiful. Although the old keep lasted till 1877, there don't seem to be any photos of it, so apparently the current keep is modelled on that of Hagi Castle. Appropriately enough I went to Hagi Castle on the same day, as well as Kokura. The town is beautiful too, lovely teramachi and people were friendlier than anywhere else I've been in Japan, though I don't think Oita is known for that.

Beautiful view, beautiful collection, tricky location. If you're directionally challenged like me, do yourself a favor, grab a cab; it's 600¥ one way.

Terrific castle with a great position , it was Sakura time when I arrived so that added to the ambience of the castle and the surrounding streets and temples.

For a concrete reconstruction, it's a nice one. It's not too far from the station. There are alot of interesting artifacts on show and you're allowed to take pictures. One of the doors of the castle, outside the actual castle-grounds, is used as one of the entrances of a school. The ishigaki of the Otemon are still present, but engulfed by modern buildings. You see that the people of Nakatsu is pleased by the choice of the next Taiga dorama personnage, namely Kuroda Kanbei. You see flags and other stuff everywhere about it.
