History

Okushima-yakata was the yakata (fortified manor hall) of the Nakai Clan for successive generations. Castellans included lords Nakai Shōsuke and Nakai Ikunosuke. Other lords or Nakai clansmen included Nakai Kuchinosuke, Nakai Sakonbē, and Fukushima Ichibē, and these are recorded in historical documents such as『佐々木南北諸氏帳』and『大洞弁天当国城主名札』. The yakata was also known as Ikushima-yakata or Ikishima-yakata (息嶋館) in the Kutsuki Bunsho (朽木文書), historical documents relating to the Kutsuki Clan. The area is known simply as Shima and the Ôshima and Okitsushima shrines are located nearby.

Visit Notes

At the site of Okushima-yakata we find fields with stone-piled retaining walls. It seems unlikely that the stone walls date all the way back to the yakata in their original state, but they may represent subsequent restorations over time. Since the fields were being worked that day I did not photograph all of the stone walls.
