Background

The Takahashi were long-time vassals of the Toda Clan and migrated with them to Matsumoto in 1726 when the Toda took over at the castle here. This, their residence, was built around that time. This actually makes it one of the oldest extant samurai residences in Shinano, and it is the only bukeyashiki remaining in downtown Matsumoto. This is a middle-class samurai home. The property has a frontage of about 7.5間 (13m), and a length of 26間, but the main structure itself is about 6.5間 wide along the road, and only about 4.5間 set back. The rest of the property is made up of garden space. The small pocket garden to the front, adjacent to the guest room, was purely for aesthetic purposes, whilst the rear garden would've also contained vegetable patches and fruit-bearing trees for domestic consumption. The kitchen area has a dirt floor. A restored kamado is found here. Formerly the family also bathed here. The roof is made from wooden shingles held in place with stones. The Takahashi-bukeyashiki was declared important cultural property in 1969. It was occupied until 2004 when the late Mr Takahashi Keizō donated it to the city. It is now open to the public and hosts small exhibits. Entry is free. I recommend you visit this little known treasure when you come and see Matsumoto Castle.
