History
Imamurajō was the residence of Imamura Yoshimitsu, a vassal of Miyoshi Nagayoshi, during the Sengoku Period. Imamura fought with Koizumi Hidekiyo against Hosokawa Harumoto, his former overlord. The fort was later of assistance to Akechi Mitsude during his attack on Honnōji. In the Edo Period Takio Shrine was built over the site.
In former times the Imagumano River flowed on the castle's northside, and the castle sat on an elevated position. The river is now beneath ground but the road slopes away from the castle, and so the castle was likely built with this elevation in mind. A bridge across the river was located next to the castle, and so Imamurajō controlled this vital point in the road network which often saw military activity.
Visit Notes
The site of Imamurajō, the main base of the Imamura Clan, is now that of a shrine, Takio-jinja (滝尾神社). Of the castle there are no ruins remaining and nor are there any markers.
