Castle Shuri Castle
Photo Order 16
Description The Hoshin Mon (奉神門) is the main entry to the Una, Shuri Castle's equivalent of a honmaru. Only the king and his highest officials could enter via the central doorway. The entire Una complex was designed according to the typical east Asian palace plan that originated in China, with the main hall (Seiden) opposite the Hoshin Mon and official and ceremonial buildings to each side. However, the Una of Shuri Castle is very unusual in that it is shaped like a rough trapezoid rather than a perfect square or rectangle and the Hoshin Mon and Seiden face west rather than south. This is believed to be because the standard palace design had to be adapted to fit the confines of an irregular hill top fortress - something that is unique in all of east Asia.
