History

Akashibujō was a fortified residence associated with Kumazawa Kazugaku. The Amano Clan were also in charge of the fort, with castellans including Amano Sukebē, Amano Jinshichirō and Amano Hanshichi. The Amano Clan were also based at Inuijō in Tôtōmi. Akashibujō was located at a crossroads which connected Owari, Shinano and Tôtōmi from Mikawa. This made them very popular with larger clans such as the Matsudaira (Mikawa), Takeda (Kai) and Imagawa (Suruga), and the extreme pressure exerted upon the clan caused internal conflict as they were forced to pivot between supporting various regional powers. This may account for a number of different lords of Akashibujō in a relatively short span of time. The Amano supported the Imagawa, the Takeda and Tokugawa Ieyasu in that order.

Visit Notes

Akashibujō was a fortified residence site in the Akashibu neighbourhood which is now on the outskirts of urban Okazaki. The site is now suburban in nature, with Shōrinji ('Pine Forest Temple') said to be the centre of the old fort, and no ruins remain.
