Asōkojō, or simple Asōjō, as it was then known, was first built, it is said, by the Asō Clan in the late 14th century. In 1415, a coalition of local clans called the 'Nakayama Seven' which included the Asō Clan, came under the aegis of Matsudaira Chikauji. In 1429, Asō Kuranosuke became castellan of Asōkojō. In the 1440s, Amano Kagetaka took over Asōkojō. In the 1450s, Matsudaira Yasuchika attacked Asōkojō. In 1487, Matsudaira Chikatada defeated Lord Kagetaka and destroyed Asōkojō. Chikatada rebuilt Asōjō upstream and across the river from this the old site which then became known as 'Old Asou Castle'. See also Asōjō.

Visit Notes

Asōkojō, 'Asou Old Castle', is a hilltop fortification site in Kajino Township, Okazaki Municipality. The site today is a flattened hilltop with abandoned fields and cenotaphs. The terrain has definitely been sculpted, with a flattened, slightly terraced portion, and a what appears to be a terraced 'belt bailey' wrapping around the hillside where it projects out toward the river bend. Since the hilltop fort was abandoned in 1487, and the site was used subsequently for agricultural purposes, it is difficult to know what the fort originally looked like, but the layout of the terrain does seem like a once fortified space.
