Background

This quarry is right on the coast at the end of the peninsula. Stones were cut right from the beach area in a kind of digging/cutting fashion (掘込方). This site has several interesting features in addition to the method of cutting out the stones. There is an area where the stone was left intact facing the ocean creating a kind of wall to help keep back spray from waves.  Along one edge there are holes cut through the rock that looks like they were meant for ropes and one place where there is a round stone knob that may have been used to tie off the ropes.  Was it used to moor boats? Or perhaps to help move stones? No one knows, but those two theories seem likely. The remains of this site are not visible during high tide.
