History
Beffu-jo is speculated to be a branch fortification of Ohhara-jo to monitor downstream traffic. It is also said to have a been a fortified manor hall in the Heian period. I suppose it could've been both, acting as a small fort or outpost in the Sengoku period. The castle was likely abandoned in 1585 after the Ohhara lands were confiscated by Hideyoshi. See Ohhara Castle for more information.
