History

‘Bushihara’ is a name dating to the early Kamikura period derived from the belief that in the 11th century the famous religious sculptor Jōchō-busshi (‘busshi’ = ‘buddhist sculptor’) visited this area. Thus the kanji used must’ve originally been ‘仏師’, but at some point this changed to ‘武士’ meaning ‘warrior’, perhaps as the area became the home of several fortified residences of the local Amino Clan. Bushihara-rui is presumed to have been another residence of the Amino Clan. It’s possible Bushihara-rui was built earlier than the other residences.

Visit Notes

Bushihara-rui is a residential fort site in the Mikkaichiba area of Enzan Township, Kōshū Municipality. It is now the site of a temple, Jōsenji, and a small hamlet (probably called Busshihara). One castle-blogger shows dorui (earthen ramparts) remains here, noting that they’re on private property, but I couldn’t find them. The rustic architecture and rural setting was worth seeing though.
