No ruins remain of Daikan’yama-toride, but the hilltop is flat and spacious, indicating that the terrain had probably been levelled at some point.

To reach the site of Daikan’yama-toride I passed through a strange place called ‘Nectar Village’. Although this sounds like it should be a factory for confectionery, it is in fact a cultist compound. The deserted village had no road-blocks and so I strolled right through, pausing to observe the architecture and full-size recreations of characters from the famous anime ‘Totoro’, including a very dubious ‘Catbus’. Kanro no Sato is a compound belonging to the new religious group Honbushin, established in 1962. Honbushin is a branch of Honmichi, established 1913, which in turn is a branch of Tenri-kyō, established in 1838. Both off-shoot groups have doctrines derived from Tenri-kyō. Tenrik-kyō claims to have two million followers, mostly in Japan, whilst Honmichi has over 300,000 and Honbushin has over 900,000, but in my opinion these organisations can’t be trusted not to inflate their own figures, and their registers may contain people who only briefly interacted with them. Core adherents nonetheless tend not patronise other faiths. Honbushin was once headquartered in Shiojiri, presumably here at Kanro no Sato, between 1962 and 1969, after which it moved to Okayama. Japan’s ‘new faiths’ often announce themselves with large architectural projects and religious monuments. Once the money from members flows in, their charismatic leaders can’t resist leaving their mark!
