History

The Dōshō-hori was a fortification and moat system built on the terraces of a bend in the Katsura River at the point where it meets with the Ôhata River. The area was known as Jōnokoshi (城腰), referring to a military structure. It is not known who built the moat, but it is thought to have been a satellite fortification of the Nakatsumori Yakata of the Oyamada Clan. According to local tradition the hori became a place to dump the corpses of criminals who were beheaded at nearby execution grounds. The area is otherwise quite scenic!
