Fushimi Castle - Miidera

三井寺

Miidera is located along the shores of Lake Biwa at the base of one of the old passes to Kyoto over the Higashiyama Mountain Range. The large main gate, called Daimon or Niomon, was originally constructed at Jorakuji Temple in Konan, Shiga. It was moved to Fushimi Castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and eventually donated to Miidera by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1601. The large 3 story pagoda was also moved to Fushimi Castle from Hisodera in Nara Prefecture, and was also donated to Miidera by Ieyasu. Why did Hideysohi need a pagoda at his castle? Who knows, it's Hideyoshi after all!
