Fushimi Castle - Nishi Honganji

西本願寺

This Karamon gate at Nishi Honganji was moved from Fushimi Castle where it was the palace main gate. It is one of the three National Treasure Karamon Gates in Kyoto (see also Toyokuni Shrine and Daitokuji). There are also theories that say it may have been moved from Osaka Castle or Jurakudai, but Fushimi Castle seems to be the most cited. The gate underwent extensive restoration of the carvings and painting from 2018-2022. These photos are actually from 2022 shortly after it was fully reopened to the public.
