Hakoyanagijou (6).JPG

History

Hakoyanagijō was built by Nakane Morikiyo in 1428. The Nakane Clan controlled six villages in this area, including Hakoyanagi and neighbouring Oro (see Oro Castle (Mikawa)) to the south. They were vassals of the Matsudaira. Later clan members were Nakane Tadasada, killed in battle against the Imagawa at Kakegawa in 1569, and Nakane Masateru, killed in battle against the Takeda at Mikataǵahara in 1573. Nakane Masateru, married to the sister of Honda Tadakatsu, served Tokugawa Ieyasu as the lord of Futamata Castle until his death.

Visit Notes

Hakoyanagijō is a castle ruin in the Hakoyanagi Township of Okazaki Municipality. The site of the old fort features terraced ishigaki (stone-piled walls) on a hillside which is now a bamboo grove. Given the early history of the castle, it is likely, albeit disappointing, that the ishigaki which has attracted castle-explorers was piled in later times, after the time of the fortification. A sign marking the castle sits authoritatively atop of the ishigaki; probably locals came to believe the ishigaki to be ruins of the castle, but seasoned castle-explorers are more weary. Given the look of these old walls, I'd happily believe that they date to the Edo period at the latest.
