Higashi Kuramae Castle
History
Higashi-Kuramaejō is supposed to have been built by Matsudaira Iekatsu. Iekatsu was the son of Nobumitsu, and so Higashi-Kuramaejō was likely in the orbit of Iwazujō, located to the north. In 1572 Naitō Ienaga was granted a fief worth about 8,000 koku by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and he took over Higashi-Kuramaejō, as well as Himejō and Fujikawajō. Ienaga was relocated along with Ieyasu to Kantō in 1590, and he was enfeoffed with territory in Kazusa Province valued at 20,000 koku, at which time Higashi-Kuramaejō was likely abandoned. Ienaga was killed during the siege of Fushimijō.
Visit Notes
Higashi-Kuramaejo is a fortified residence site, though no ruins remain and the site is now a shrine to Tenman. I looked hard to find something but there’s nothing to report. There is a small forest surrounding the shrine, and I poked around in there for possible remains without success. The shrine grounds are slightly elevated on the west side. There are several neighbourhood names, aza in Japanese, next to the shrine, which mean things like ‘East Hall’, ‘West Hall’, and ‘New Hall’, and these may be related to the castle.
For more information see Iwazu Castle.
