Hime Castle (Hanishina)
History
Visit Notes
The ruins of Himejō consist of modest baileys separated by trenches and embankments, and there is an explanation board about the castle in the main bailey too. The site can be reached by descending from Katsuraojō. However, I opted to take a short cut by climbing to Himejō first. There was no trail though so I just climbed up the cliffside. It was steep and rocky, but a bunch of iron mesh had been wrung over the rocks to prevent landslides. This is very easy to climb. So I did my best spiderman impression and got up it. Then I used game trails when the meshing ran out. I noticed huge bear footprints and realised I had left my bear bell in my bag at the hotel. I was a bit disconcerted but ploughed onward and soon came to the site without incident. The climb from Himejō to Katsuraojō is not so demanding. Across the valley where the town of Sakaki is situated, other Murakami castle sites can be seen, such as Wagōjō and Kokuzōsanjō.
