History

Idajō was a hirajiro (flatland castle) constructed on a hill by the Sakai Clan as a satellite fortification of Okazaki Castle. The Sakai Clan was founded by Sakai Hirochika, considered to be the son of Matsudaira Chikauji, founder of the Matsudaira Clan. Lords of Idajō included Sakai Ujitada, Sakai Tadakatsu, Sakai Yasutada, Sakai Tadachika, and Sakai Tadatsugu. Tadatsugu, who was born at Idajō, was one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s most prominent generals.

Latter day depictions of Idajō (castle bloggers have been around from at least the Edo period) show the ruins of a castle with a central square compound surrounded by moats and earthen ramparts. In the Sengoku period the castle had also a secondary baileys and a settlement attached to the south. The residences of the Sakai Clan were located around the castle.

Visit Notes

Located in the Ida neighbourhood of Okazaki City, Idajō is now a park and an Inari shrine. The park and koaza (‘block’) are both called ‘Shiroyama’. No definitive ruins remain but the shape of the hill and its defensive potential are suggestive.
