Ide Yakata

History

Ide-yakata was built by the Ide Clan as their fortified manor hall at the start of the Kamakura period. The Ide served the Fuji Grand Shrine and were vassals of the Fuji Clan. In 1193, Minamoto Yoritomo stayed at the manor during a hunting trip, and the name of the area, Karijuku, is said to derive from this event. In 1569 Takeda Shingen invaded Suruga and attacked Ômiyajō, the base of the Fuji Clan. The Ide helped the defenders, and Hōjō Ujimasa sent a letter of commendation to the Ide clansmen for their assistance to Imagawa Ujizane. The Ide Clan would eventually be split between those who supported the Takeda Clan and those who supported the Hōjō Clan. After the fall of the Takeda Clan the Ide Clan submitted to Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1606, the Ide patriarch became the magistrate for Mishima to the south. The original Ide residence was maintained, however, and it seems that the Ide-yakata site also became known as the Ide-no-daikan-yashiki from this time. The original gatehouse of the manor burnt down in the 1790s, but was rebuilt in 1848 and survives to this day.

Visit Notes

Ide-yakata is the medieval fortified manor hall and later residence of the Ide Clan. The residence, which is still occupied, retains a beautiful kōraimon style gate and nagaya (rowhouses) from the Edo period.

The yashiki is located close to the beautiful Shiraito Falls which we visited beforehand and I would highly recommend stopping by. I bought a gratuitous amount of dried persimmons from a stall there.
