This is the site of the the medieval fortified residence of Itō Genba, a vassal of Takeda Shingen. Itō Genba earned distinction during the 1569 battle of Sanmasu Pass by capturing an enemy Hōjō soldier alive. It is said that in 1581 the Itō Clan worked to defend nearby Nōkenjō.The Itō Clan may have surrendered to Tokugawa forces in 1582; by the Edo period a descendant of Itō Genba served the Tokugawa in Mito Domain.
See Nouken Castle for more information.
