History

The oldest written records of Nagahama Castle date to 1579, but it was likely around from earlier times as a satellite fortification of the Hojo. Nagahama is situated to protect the bay which was one of the Hojo's main ports for their fleet of ships. The Hojo had a well developed fleet with ports in Misaki and Uraga for their battles against the Satomi in Chiba too. Nagahama Castle was strengthened and came into prominence particularly after the Takeda started encroaching on their territory and built Sanmaibashi Castle (Numazu Castle) nearby. There was a large sea battle against the Takeda in 1580, but the fleet was little used after the destruction of the Takeda clan. When Hideyoshi's fleet arrived for the Siege of Odawara, the Hojo ships had already moved on to Odawara so the castle and bay was useless. It surrendered with Nirayama Castle and was abandoned in 1590.

Visit Notes

A small fortification, but you really get the feel of how it could have looked out over the Hojo fleet. They have recently developed this into a nice historical park that is well maintained with good signage. This view of Mt Fuji is unbeatable too!
割と小さいお城ですが、後北条氏の港でだったことがよく感じられます。案内板も充実していて歴史公園としてきれいに整備してあります。富士山の眺めも最高です。

It's hard to think how this site can be improved other than by adding some more structures, and possibly more info' in English. It's one of the best castle-parks I've visited.
