Junhanshi Yashiki

History

In 1864 the Tengutō Rebellion rocked northern Kantō, and the Shogunate suffered several humiliating defeats in Hitachi before finally forcing the Tengu rebels to surrender after a fresh, overwhelming force was summoned by Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shōgun. The rebels had been reacting against continued bakufu deference to foreigners encroaching upon Japan, and were part of the Sonnō-Jōi movement to 'revere the Emperor and expel the barbarians', inspired by the Tokugawa Mitsukuni's Dai-Nihonshi and other Kokugaku (Nativist) ideas. Their upraising was one of the many violent episodes which weakened the authority of the Shōgun in the closing years of the Edo period.

Remnants of the Tengutō fled the Shogunate's armies in a bid to out-flank them and march on Kyōto, but they were forced to detour and were eventually cornered in Echizen by Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and surrendered in 1865. After the rebels were defeated, those who had not fled or been killed in battle were treated harshly. Hundreds were executed, including their leader, Takeda Kōunsai. But 110 of them were put into the custody of Obama Domain and placed under house arrest in Sagaki, including Takeda Kinjirō, Kōunsai's grandson. The Junhanshi-yashiki was built to accomodate them in 1866 near Sagaki-jin'ya. In 1867 these men were pardoned, and joined the ranks of Obama Domain (the name of the yashiki reflects this). In 1868, following the Meiji Restoration, they were ordered back to Mito Domain by the Imperial Court.

Visit Notes

Junhanshi-yashiki is a fortified residence and prison site in Sagaki, Mihama Municipality. Only ishigaki (stone walls) remain. The site is near to Sagaki-jin'ya and I checked out the ruins of the yashiki on my way there.
