Kamigatou Yashiki
History
Kamigatō-yashiki is thought to have been the fortified residence of Katō Kagekado in the Kamakura period. Katō Kagekado fought with Yasuda Yoshisada of the Kai-Genji Clan. Kamigatō-yashiki measured about 60m on each side in a simple square layout; it was surrounded by dorui.
The 'gatō (河東)' in Kamigatō is a morphology of 'Katō (加藤)', the clan name. What was originally the township (defined as a collection of villages) of Katō is now divided between Kamigatō ('Upper Katō') in Shōwa Municipality and Shimogatō ('Lower Katō) in Chūō Municipality. In medieval Japan, clans took their names from the territory they ruled.
Visit Notes
The site of Kamigatō-yashiki is now that of Kumano Shrine; some very shallow dorui (earthen ramparts) remain immediately north of the shrine hall, appearing to form a corner segment of the ramparts.
