History

Kamikurabara-rui was the fortified residence of Nakamura Ukonnojō, and so it is also referred to as the Nakamura-yashiki (there are many Nakamura-yashiki in Kai Province, and this one is in historical Koma County, with others in Yamanashi and Yatsushiro counties). The Koma-Nakamura Clan served as members of the Tsuganeshū, a group of warriors formed by the Tsugane Clan who served the hegemonic Takeda Clan by protecting the border between Kai and Saku County in Shinano Province. Since the fort was quite expansive, apparently measuring 200m on at least one side, it may have provided garrison space for the soldiers of multiple local clans of the Tsuganeshū.

Visit Notes

Kamikurabara-rui is a medieval fortified residence site in the Kurabara area of Takane Township in Hokuto Municipality, Yamanashi Prefecture. I went into the woods which now occupy the site (really a cedar plantation) where there are some old cenotaphs here and there. I could confirm no ruins, even though there is supposed to be dorui (earthen ramparts) here. I took a picture of a mound of earth near a canopied wood-cutting shed. I suppose it could be dorui but it’s hard to tell. Apparently there used be a berm 200m long here, which is quite big for a residence.
