History
Although the castle’s founding date is unknown, it is said to have been built by the Kamitōno Clan. The clan claimed they were descendants of vassals who served the Imperial court in the Kamakura period. Although the castle was abandoned at the beginning of the Edo period, part of the citadel was used as a Jin’ya for the Tanakura fief for a while after.
Visit Notes
I visited by car. I found out that the locals also call this site Yashiomijou. The preferred reading is also Katohnojou after the neighbourhood, but I seem to recall Kamitohnojou was the original name. I take this opportunity to relate that the honmaru was full of coriander when I visited, and stepping on it brought out that smell very strongly. And then a British man erected a May Pole and children danced around it to the melody of english folk music. That is what happened when I went. Profile and photos contributed by AdamT (ART).
