History

Kiridôshi-jin'ya, an Edo period jin'ya, was originally the site of a fortification called Nagamorijō. Nagamorijō is said to have been first built by Shibuya Konnōmaru in 1185, at which time it was probably a fortified manor hall. The fortress was expanded in 1339 under Toki Yoritô, governor of Mino, when it became the headquarters of the Toki Clan and the seat of Mino Province. In 1353 Toki Yoriyasu built Kawatejō and relocated there; Toki Akinao (/Akitada) took over at Nagamorijō, but thereafter Kawatejō was the main base of the Toki Clan. Nagamorijō is thought to have been abandoned when Saitō Dōsan rebuilt Inabayamajō in 1539.

In 1755 Andō Nobunari became lord of Kanō Domain but was shortly thereafter transferred to Iwaki-Taira Domain (50,000 koku). He, however, retained territory in Mino valued at 18,000 koku after becoming a rōjū (a member of the shogun's council), and in 1803 Kiridôshi-jin'ya was built on the former site of Nagamorijō by the Andō Clan to oversee their Mino holdings, which included thirty villages. The jin'ya was staffed by twenty-two people, including two magistrates, four deputy magistrates, five sergeants and five constables. The jin'ya was abolished in 1871 when Kiridôshi became part of Kasamatsu Prefecture.

Visit Notes

Kiridôshi-jin'ya is a former jin'ya site in the Kiridôshi neighbourhood of Gifu. No ruins remain but there is a stele and explanation panel for the site at a local altar hall. The site is now housing. This site is fairly minor but I wanted to visit because the domain was an exclave of Iwaki-Taira Domain where I used to live - albeit it was no longer ruled by a daimyō when I was there, though from how I saw the mayor dressed one time who could say...

In medieval times, Kiridôshi-jin'ya was the site of Nagamori Castle. Interestingly the site today is found near two stations, Nagamori Station on the Takayama Line, and Kiridôshi Station on the Meitetsu-Kagamiǵahara line.
