History
Niwayajō was the fortified residence of the Niwaya Clan, which, under Commander Niwaya Saemon, a chief vassal of the Obata Clan, also served as a branch fort of Kuniminejō (on the mountain behind where the Obata-jin'ya is today). The fort was destroyed during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara Campaign.
Visit Notes
Niwayajō is a yakata (fortified manor house) ruin. Dorui (earthen ramparts) surround a small enclosure except where there is a steep cliff overlooking a river, about 40m to each side, enclosing a small space. There is a koguchi (entrance) on the southern end of the western ramparts. The site is now a shrine.
