History

Kuboejō was built by the Sasaki Clan in the Nanbokuchō period. In the early 16th century the castle was taken over by the Takano Clan, who were the rulers of Rokujizōjō. In the Sengoku period Kuboejō was expanded by Yamaoka Kagesuke, the younger brother of Yamaoka Kagetaka, the lord of nearby Setajō. Together with Setajō, Kuboejō occupied a strategic position guarding key trade routes. What survives of the castle's structure dates to this time.

Visit Notes

Visiting Kuboejō was rather disappointing. Ultimately it's my fault for not doing sufficient research even though I went on a whim. I had read that there was a tenshudai (platform for a large tower) ruin with ishigaki (stone-piled ramparts) and so I decided to visit on the way to meet Eric-senpai at Shinohara. Unfortunately these ruins are located on the grounds of a large factory and not open to the public. I was only able therefore to visit the part of the castle which extends to the site of Wakamatsu Shrine. Here there are dorui (earthen ramparts) and from below the earth looks configured in the manner of a Sengoku period fort - with kirigishi (shaved hillsides) and so on, and so one can get a sense of the castle if only dimly, but it appears that the main prize is off-limits!
