History

Nabeyamajō (南部山城), also called Nabejō (鍋城), was the residence of Kotō Takenao, the 16th and penultimate head of the Kotō Clan, in the 14th century. Kotō Yoshitake was defeated by the Ôuchi Clan. When Mōri Motonari defeated Sue Harukata and Ôuchi Yoshinaga, one of his vassals, Horitate Naomasa, captured Nabeyamajō and renovated it at his own expense, lording over the surrounding the area from the castle for the next two decades.

Visit Notes

Nabeyamajō is now the site of Shimonoseki City Hall. No ruins remain. It was the first stop on my Shimonoseki Walking Tour. I woke up at 4am that day and when I set out it was still dark. It wasn't fully light yet so I stopped here to have a look, stalling for time.
