History

Yamaguchi Noritsugu, lord of Narumi Castle was allied with Oda Nobuhide fortifying Owari against the Imagawa. After the death of Nobuhide, Yamaguchi flipped to the Imagawa and turned over the castle, entrusting it to his son Noriyoshi. Nobunaga once attacked the castle in 1553 but was defeated. Afterwards, the Yamaguchi father and son were ordered to commit seppuku by Imagawa Yoshimoto and the Imagawa's trusted retainer Okabe Motonobu was made castellan. In 1559 Nobunaga built Tange Fort, Zenshoji Fort, and Nakajima Fort to cut off Narumi Castle from important Imagawa supply lines. It was fiercely held by Okabe Motonobu even after the death of Imagawa Yoshimoto at the Battle of Okehazama. Okabe went so far as to rescue Yoshimoto's body (head?) from the battlefield. Okabe eventually surrendered the castle to Nobunaga and his own life was spared on the condition that he turn over Yoshimoto's head to Nobunaga.

Visit Notes

There really isn't anything castle-like to see here except for the signs, but historically it makes for an interesting stopover if you're exploring the neighboring sites. The castle location, now Narumi Castle Park, offers a commanding view of the area too. While gathering information for these profiles, I also discovered that there may be a relocated gate from Narumi Castle (or the gate uses materials from a castle gate) at the nearby Tofukuin temple.
