History
Nirasaki-jin’ya, founded by Hitotsubashi Munetada, was the fortified headquarters of the Hitotsubashi Clan for Kai Province from 1753 to 1801. Hitotsubashi Munetada was worth 100,000 koku, and 30,000 of that was made up of territory in Kai. He had earlier had his Kai base in Usudani from 1746, but relocated to Nirasaki soon after. Kai was controlled by the Tokugawa and Munetada was from the Hitotsubashi junior branch of the Tokugawa. For this reason Nirasaki-jin'ya is also known as the Hitotsubashi-jin'ya. To distinguish it from the earlier Usudani-jin'ya I refer to it here chiefly as Nirasaki-jin'ya. Visit Notes
Nirasaki's downtown has swallowed up any remains of Nirasaki-jin'ya and the site today is now housing and Zōzen'in, a temple. I photographed the temple; there was a small cenotaph for deceased pets there.
