Kawasaki Battery (Obama Domain)

History

In 1854, the year following the arrival of the 'Kurofune' of Commodore Matthew Perry of the US Navy, Obama Domain constructed a series of daiba (battery emplacements for cannon) throughout its coastal territory in order to protect Wakasa Bay. Kawasaki-daiba was one of several daiba constructed in the area of Obamajō, the centre of the domain. The Kawasaki-daiba was constructed and commanded by Shigeta Ūemon. Others, such as Kurokuwa Hachibē, constructed nearby daiba, including Oshirohama-daiba, Umiteura-daiba, Matsuǵashita-daiba, and Hachimanshita-daiba. Between these daiba there were over fifty cannons, of which Kawasaki-daiba contained seven. Kawasaki-daiba was decommissioned in the Meiji period; the daiba site is now a park.

Visit Notes

Kawasaki-daiba was a battery emplacement built by the Obama Domain in the Bakumatsu period. The site is now a small park at the edge of reclaimed land used mostly for industrial purposes. The park is surrounded by embankments. My impression was that these embankments were the remains of the daiba; there is a small explanation panel about the daiba and its history.
