History

Ogawajō was the main base of the Ogawa Clan. The Ogawa Clan were present in Tama County as early as the Heian period when the Ogawa area was used as pastureland, and were part of a coalition of local clans called the Nishi-tō. It seems, however, that the Ogawa were displaced in this area with the arrival of Ôishi Nobushige in 1356. Ogawajō must’ve been constructed and inhabited at some point before then, but its construction date is unknown. It is speculated to have been the residence of Ogawa Munehiro, dating it to the Heian period, but this is not known for sure. The temple Hōseiji was built in the early Edo period on the site of the fortification.

Visit Notes

Ogawajō, also referred to as Hōseiji-yakata, is a fortified manor hall site in Akiruno Municipality, Tōkyō Metropolis. The site of the yakata is now a temple, Hōseiji, and no ruins remain, though the temple sits on a rather defendable looking perch on a river terrace. Some ruins remained of the castle up until modern times, it seems, but a moat which was used for illegal rubbish tipping has subsequently been buried.
