History

Among the vassals of Inōe Mitsumori, a member of the Kiso-Minamoto who founded the Takai-Minamoto, were the Hoshina Clan, and one of their men was one Ogawara Saburō. This man was taken to Kamakura, initially with grim prospects it seems, but he became a direct retainer of the Shōgun there. The Ogawara Clan who used Ogawara-yakata as their fortified residence were likely vassals of the Inōe then.

Local folklore tells that a large amount of cold coins were found buried in the fields here, and the area became known as Chōja-yashiki. A ‘Chōja’ is a wealthy landowner. There are many ‘Chōja-yashiki’ sites, and this ‘Chōja-yashiki’ is presumed to be a reference to Ogawara-yakata.

Visit Notes

Ogawara-yakata is a fortified manor hall site in Ogawara, Suzaka Municipality. No ruins remain but there is a signboard detailing the site’s history on-site. It is known locally as the Chōja-yashiki, which refers to a wealthy provincial landowner.
