History

In the late 15th century Ômura Tadatoki settled in Kai and became a vassal of the hegemonic Takeda Clan. Ômura-yashiki was built by Ômura Tadataka. The Ômura served the Takeda as warriors responsible for helping to police and protect the border between Kai and Musashi. Something quite interesting about the Ômura Clan is that when Takeda Katsuyori died in 1582 they first fought for the Hōjō Clan against the Tokugawa Clan. Since the Tokugawa would go on to control all of Kai this would seem like a death knell, but although the Ômura were defeated by Tokugawa forces, some of them survived and were permitted to submit to being Tokugawa vassals and keep their bushi status.

Visit Notes

Ômura-yashiki is a fairly well preserved fortified residence site in Kurashina Village, Makioka Township, Yamanashi Municipality. The site is mostly surrounded by dorui (earthen ramparts). Due to it being on sloped land and making use of terrain, some of the ramparts are very tall. A farmer graciously gave me position to go in his fields and circle around the dorui. Inside of the earthworks is a private residence.
