History

Little is known about the Okiyama Fort. It extends across a ridge about starting about 700m from the base of Akatsuka Castle. The area of town at the point between the castle and the fort is called "Daimon" (Big Gate) indicating there was likely a gate here and showing that the two fortifications worked together as one large defense. As a borderland castle between Hojo and Uesugi lands it makes sense that this long natural hilltop would have been a strategic defense in times of unrest.

Visit Notes

The Okiyama Fort is part of the Akatsuka Park. There are a couple places identified on maps as possible trenches, but more serious study of the site is required to understand to what extent it was used as a fortification.
