Komatsu Castle (Sagami)

History

Komatsujō, constructed by Nagai Hidehiro, is thought to have been a branch castle of Tsukui Castle or Katakura Castle. The Hōjō Clan developed the fort in preparation for Takeda Shingen invading Sagami from Kai. The Nagai Clan were castellans of Komatsujō, and they lived at the foot of the castle mount; the site of Hōsenji today is where the castle’s kyokan (residential area) stood.

Visit Notes

Komatsujō is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) in the Midori Ward of Sagamihara Municipality. It is not high up and has a well maintained trail. There are some explanatory boards about the castle with a map. This earthworks castle is essentially made up of a series of small bailey spaces segregated by horikiri, trenches which bisect the mountain ridge. There is some evidence of other earthworks such as dorui (earthen ramparts) and tatebori (climbing moats). The earthworks behind the signboard may have supported a yagura (small tower).
