Sannohe Castle

History

After the original Sannohe Castle was burned down in a rebellion by one of his retainers, Nanbu Harumasa built his new castle on this site. The castle was further fortified into a modern castle with a palace and yagura by Nanbu Nobunao after he became lord in 1582. After Kunohe Masazane's uprising in 1591, Nobunao moved into Kunohe Castle and his nephew became lord of Sannohe Castle.

Visit Notes

There is no evidence this castle had a main keep or yagura in this style. It is a mock reconstruction.

There is talk of demolishing this poor, defenceless mogi tower. The Agency for Cultural Affairs (or whatever it's called) is low-key strong-arming the locals over the issue in exchange for increased historical status for the site overall. I have my misgivings.

Sannohejō is a Sengoku Period mountaintop castle. The site has some remaining ishigaki (stone ramparts) and impressive dorui (earthen embankments) surrounding the ruins of a gate. The donjon is a 1967 historically inaccurate reconstruction and does not represent any structure that used to exist. In 1989 one of the castle's gatehouses was reconstructed from wood, which has a more authentic feel to it. One original historic structure exists today, a small gate relocated offsite at nearby Ryōsenji in the Meiji Period after having been used as part of the Jin'ya (fortified administrative center for lords or bureaucrats without a castle) which was built on the old castle site in 1684.
