History

Sannō was an enclave of Kurita Village. The Kurita Clan also headed Togakushi Shrine, a guardian deity of which was called Sannō (Mountain King), and this is where the name derives. The Kurita Clan developed the Sannō Weir in the middle ages by using a tributary of the Susobana River, and cultivated the land. A fortified residence was located in this area which belonged to a clansman responsible for protecting the water supply (堰守, Enshu), but the yakata's history is not well detailed. Villagers would peacefully farm for the most part, but there were often disputes over water rights, and powerful associations formed to protect water sources and maintain infrastructure. Every drop was precious and violent struggles might emerge if one group infringed upon the rights of another. The Kurita were neighboured by the Naganuma-Shimazu and Matsushiro clans. The Takeda Clan would later conquer the territory.

Visit Notes

I just passed by the site of Sannō-yakata. It was by my hostel in Nagano where I went and put my bag before continuing with my journey to Asahijō. There's nothing here except a sign attesting to some history in the area, mentioning a Sannō clansman but not the yakata specifically. The site is now a car park and tall buildings. Sannō-yakata could be translated as "the Hall of the Mountain King", but there were no trolls here and it was quite underwhelming.
