Saraki Jin'ya
History
The Tokuyama Clan, descendants of the Toki Clan, governed this area as hatamoto (direct retainers of the Shōgun) from Saraki-jin'ya in the Edo Period. Tokuyama Norihide was the first such ruler, awarded for his services at Sekigahara, and he took up residence in his homeland of Tokuyama-gō in Kakami District. Twelve generations of Tokuyama ruled from Saraki-jin'ya until the Meiji Period, though the jin'ya may not have been so called until the township became known as Saraki-gō. The layout of the jin'ya is known from Edo Period maps and excavations in the year 2000 which unearthed foundation stones, wells and a moat.
Visit Notes
Saraki-jin'ya is a well maintained jin'ya site (as Hatamoto Tokuyama Jin'ya Park), though ruins mostly consist of low dorui (earthen ramparts). A small gate has been reconstructed.
