Shimowada Castle

History

Shimowadajō was the fortified residence of Matsudaira Chikao around the first half of the 16th century. In the middle 16th century the castellan was Matsudaira Tomotada.

Shimowadajō is a fortified residence site in the Shimowada neighbourhood of Okazaki City. The neighbourhood is on the outskirts of urban Okazaki, and is half fields and half suburban. The site of Shimowadajō is unfortunately on the developed side, and no definitive ruins remain. The site of the castle is said to be that of the temple, Jōrakuji, which is opposite the 'Dog's Hair Shrine'. Some castle bloggers point to the temple's stone wall as possibly being the remains of the fort, but I am sceptical.

This site is not to be confused with Kamiwadajō to the north; the two sites appear to have no relation. Nor are Kamiwada and Shimowada contiguous, as their names may suggest; perhaps there were two places called 'Wada' close together - a very common name - and so 'Upper' and 'Lower' were affixed to distinguish between them in Nukata County.
