History

When Chiba Yoritane moved to the Musashi area and built Akatsuka Castle he was also entrusted with Shimura Castle. The early origins of Shimura Castle are not well known but it was likely the home castle of the Shimura clan, allies of the Toshima. For Chiba Yoritane and the Hojo, the set of defenses including Shimura Castle, Okiyama Fort and Akatsuka Castle entrusted to Chiba Yoritane formed a strong defensive line against the Uesugi.

The castle was likely abandoned in 1590 after the fall of the Hojo clan at the Siege of Odawara.

Visit Notes

The Honmaru of the castle is now a school and an apartment. building. The Ninomaru is the Shimura Kumano Shrine. There is a slight trench remaining between the two but it's hidden in the trees and you might not notice it. There are also some earthen embankments of the Ninomaru around the shrine. Shimura Castle is not one you would go out of your way to visit, but it is worth visiting as a satellite castle of Akatsuka Castle
