History

The Tagaya clan came with the Satake when they moved from the Hitachi domain in 1602. The Tagaya became the castellan of Hiyama Castle. When Hiyama Castle was abandoned in 1626, under the one castle per domain decree, the Tagaya built a large fortified manor on a hill near the base of Hiyama Castle. It was the scale of some small castles with mutliple baileys for the dwellings of the lord and his retainers. You can also see the remains of two fortified entrances around the site and the two entrances to the main bailey.

Visit Notes

The sign along the road at the trail to the site is very nice, but unfortunately, the signs and maintenance of the rest of the site have lapsed over the years. I've seen better photos of the interior where you can see the baileys and embankments much more clearly. Regardless, if you visit Hiyama Castle, this is an easy to locate and quick stope near the castle. Further down the road is the Jomyoji Temple, where you will find one of the (relocated) original gates of Hiyama Castle.
