Tanaka-Buzennokami-yashiki was the residence of Tanaka Toranori, a Tanaka Clan member with the honourific title of 'Protector of Buzen (Province)'. Tanaka Toranori was likely to have been a vassal of Takeda Nobutora (Takeda Shingen's father), since he was permitted to take the given name Toranori, sharing the 'Tora (虎)' with Nobutora which means 'tiger'. Another lord of the estate may have been Tanaka Masashige. The Kai-Tanaka served Takeda Shingen, and it is thought that their yashiki became 'rōnin yashiki' following the fall of the Takeda Clan in 1582. The Toranori-yashiki may have become the Tanaka Clan's main residence in the Edo period as it appears that the Shogunate recognised their land claims - in a case of adverse possession I suppose - granting them the 'red seal' of Shogunal authority. Thus the residence is also known as the Goshuin-yashiki, indicating the Shogunal seal. This is interesting since the Kai-Tanaka would've originally opposed the Tokugawa Clan as part of the Kuisshiki-shū, a group of frontier warriors who protected Takeda territory along the southern border of Kai Province which bordered Tokugawa territory; maybe they surrendered at a critical time before the death of Takeda Katsuyori? This is similar to the case of the Hatta Clan who also formerly served the Takeda and then became direct retainers of the Shogunate.

See Tanaka Yazouyaemon Yashiki for more information on the Kai-Tanaka.

Visit Notes

Tanaka-Buzennokami-yashiki was located in the housing area centred around what are now maisonettes called Starlight B, opposite the Tamaho Branch Daily Yamazaki on the Nirasaki-South Alps Main Road. No ruins remain and the site is now developed over with housing and allotments. It's a shame there's nothing to see of the yashiki as its history appears quite interesting.
