Tsukanokoshikofun Fort
History
Tsukanokoshi-kofun is the result of medieval people cannibalising an ancient burial mound for use as a fort. The centre of the mound and burial chamber were dug out to form ramparts. Before being reclaimed for rice paddies, the fort was also surrounded by a moat, and this may have also been a feature of the kofun. Given the small area of this fort, it must’ve functioned in conjunction with other nearby fortifications.
Visit Notes
As one can tell from the name, Tsukanokoshikofun-toride is an earthworks fort built out of an ancient burial mound (a kofun). But, although the dorui (earthen ramparts) look smart, the area enclosed is a paltry 10m². That’s very small. This fort would’ve been of limited use against a large army or a small one for that matter, but it may have acted as a forward position of other better protected forts nearby, such as Tonoyama-toride.
